Joseph-Albert Ponsin & Alexandre-Napoléon Bourjois

Bourjois was originally established by actor Joseph-Albert Ponsin at the Parfumerie Théatrale in Paris in 1863. He sold the business in 1868 to his partner, Alexandre-Napoléon Bourjois, thus changing the company name to Bourjois. What started as professional cosmetics for stage actors soon transformed into a range of products used and loved by actors and audiences alike. Bourjois offered a variety of color shades making it possible for women to subtly wear cosmetics at a time when it was only just becoming acceptable to do so in public. The iconic compact rouge in its little round pot was launched in 1879 and continues to anchor the Bourjois product line over 130 years later.
